Paediatric surgery

Paediatric surgeon consultations, assessment for procedures and scar assessment

About the service

Paediatric surgery deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that require a surgeon’s assessment in children from the newborn period up to 18 years of age. During the consultation the doctor takes a history, examines the child and decides whether conservative treatment, observation or assessment for a procedure is needed.

Consultations are provided by Maria Sobczyk, MD, a doctor in training in paediatric surgery. Visits can be booked online on the doctor’s profile or by phone on +48 880 018 703. Visits are private, without a referral, and pre-operative laboratory tests are available on site at the sample collection point.

Who it’s for

  • Newborns and infants with an umbilical or inguinal hernia, undescended testicle, hydrocele
  • Children with phimosis and other foreskin problems, a short frenulum, labial adhesions
  • Children with skin and subcutaneous lesions: cysts, sebaceous cysts, pilonidal sinus, ingrown toenail
  • Children with wounds, injuries or scars, and patients before a planned procedure

Scope

  • Paediatric surgeon consultation
  • Assessment for a surgical procedure and post-operative check-ups
  • Minor procedures: wound dressing and suturing, removal of stitches, removal of a small skin or subcutaneous lesion, treatment of an ingrown toenail
  • Consultation and assessment of post-operative, post-traumatic and burn scars

What the consultation involves

The visit begins with a conversation with the parent about the complaints and treatment to date. The doctor examines the child, orders an ultrasound or laboratory tests if needed, and discusses the next steps. Many problems in small children (e.g. umbilical hernia, foreskin adhesions) only require observation; the surgeon explains when a procedure is indicated and at what age it is best performed.

When not to delay

Urgent medical assessment, ideally at a paediatric emergency department, is needed for: sudden, severe abdominal or scrotal pain; a hernia that cannot be pushed back, with pain and vomiting; an injury with a wound requiring treatment; and increasing swelling or redness after an injury.

What to prepare for the visit

The child’s health booklet, results of previous tests (ultrasound, blood tests), hospital discharge summaries and a list of medications taken. Prices of consultations and procedures are given in the price list.
